At the age of 19, Osamu's first attempt resulted in tragedy. After ingesting sleeping pills with a bar hostess, they both jumped into the sea.
The woman perished, while Osamu survived. This incident would later become the subject of five short stories, including the renowned "Flowers of Buffoonery" (1935).
